SWELliNG (Sulphates With Expansion: the roLe of New crystals’ Growth) and SWELliNG_2 (Sulphates With Expansion: voLume and phase chaNGes over long periods) - Excite projects

Each folder contains a stack of .tiff files achieved after reconstructing a µCT scan. The scans were performed as part of the SWELLiNG and SWELLiNG2 project (Excite Network). The main purpose of the performed experiment was to measure the changes in volume and observe the changes in the microstructure occurring in anhydrite samples during partial immersion in water, aiming at replicating the mechanism of swelling that often occurs in real anhydrite-bearing rocks during tunnel excavation. The folder contains CT scans acquired on 6 samples of natural anhydrite from the Gypsum Unit of the Upper Susa Valley (Western Alps). Samples sizes Diameter: 10 mm Height: 15 mm ± 2 mm Samples were scanned undisturbed and after partial immersion in an aqueous solution saturated in CaSO4. Until the scans taken at Day 105, the samples were in an open container, with possibility of water evaporation. After Day 175, the container was closed, and the samples were in an environment with relative humidity close to 100%.
