Descriptions

The 1979 marine geology work on the Ebro Delta focused on analysing continuous piston cores and high‑resolution seismic profiles to characterise the sedimentary architecture and recent evolution of the submerged delta and adjacent continental shelf. Two oceanographic campaigns—aboard the Cornide de Saavedra and the Catherine Laurence—collected 40 piston cores, grab and gravity samples, and around 250 seismic profiles across the Catalano‑Balearic margin. Laboratory analyses included gamma‑density logging, grain‑size and carbonate determinations, radiography, and microscopic study of the sand fraction, complemented by triangular diagrams to define sedimentary facies. The seismic data reveal prograding deltaic lobes, gas‑charged sediment zones, and stratigraphic sequences spanning the last ~500,000 years, with thicker sediment accumulations east and south of the delta, providing the first integrated reconstruction of the recent geological development of the Ebro Delta system.
